HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 : Design and Build Quality

Weighing just 1.34 kilograms (2.94lbs), the HP Omnibook UltraFlip 14 is attractive, easy to carry, and combined with its all-aluminum shell, is both beautiful and resistant to extreme impacts, demanding perfection from HP’s technical standards for business devices. This new model looks sleek and is built stronger than all HP devices with high expectations in mind, featuring an all-metal chassis and sandblasted anodized finish, thus blending exquisitely like the Spectre. This spindle also cuts away from the spectre models. Unlike other spectre models, the HP logo proudly placed in the center makes the Omnibook UltraFlip 14 distinctive with its aesthetically sharp cut corners behind the keyboard deck.

Similar to the HP spectre models, this laptop also has a wide spindle of 360 degrees allowing effortless shifts from laptop to tablet, tent, or stand mode. For lectures, class, or even recreational activities, the versatility of the spectre is unmatched. Finally, the user experience, accompanied by gently rounded edges in tablet mode, is enhanced further.

The included stylus features a natural ergonomic design similar to common writing instruments and includes two buttons for function control. Its charging cap is cleverly concealed, and the stylus attaches magnetically to the lower right corner of the touchscreen and the margin of the lid extending from the keypad.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 : Display and Performance

Like others premium ultraportable, the HP omnibook Flip 14 has a 14 inch OLED display which is touch-sensitive and capable of multitouch and stylus input. With a resolution of 2880 by 1800 pixels, the display refreshes at a maximum of 120 Hz. In addition to a glass surface, it has a glossy finish and moderately thin bezels. Furthermore, the 14 inch HDR OLED display provides crystal clear vision, some AI Text imagery, with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Videos and images captured by the 9MP IR AI webcam look relatively sharp, but the color appears overly saturated, and video translation is not up to the mark. Like most of the other webcams, the quality of the image depends heavily on lighting, which looks quite grainy and noisy. While Studio Effects on Windows does not fix the color issues, it does offer features powered by AI, like auto-framing and background blur. The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 is missing the full range of Windows Studio Effects, despite housing one of Intel’s latest AI processors. Some effects, such as Portrait Light and Creative Filters, were unavailable and grayed out.

In addition, the webcam integrates an IR sensor, which allows for facial recognition, meaning logging in is both quick and secure. Another form of biometric authentication is offered through the power button that beams the fingerprint scanner. The camera also has a physical lens cover, so the user’s privacy is secured when not on a video call.

The Core Ultra Series 2 chips from Intel are designed to offer a high performance and efficiency where the focus on the latter is more significant compared to the previous generation Core Ultra chips. The Core Ultra 7 258V has a power draw of 8 to 37 watts and the Core Ultra 155H chip has a range of 20 to 155 watts. There are also other differences between the chips such as the removal of hyperthreading which Intel did to increase power efficiency. The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14’s Core Ultra 7 258V has eight physical cores (four performance and four low-power) with a total of eight processing threads. In contrast, the previous generation Core Ultra 7 155H has 16 cores (four performance, eight efficient and two low-power cores) and, with hyper-threading, 22 threads.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 : Ports and WiFI

The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 seems to be an updated version of the HP Spectre X360 14, . However, the Flip’s dimensions of 12.35 x 8.51 x 0.59 inches and weight of 2.97 pounds are almost identical to those of the 2024 Spectre X360 which has 12.35 x 8.68 x 0.67 inches and 3.19 pounds. While the Ultra Flip is indeed narrower and lighter, it loses a USB-A port in the Omni branding transition.
Two USB-C ports are located on the rear angled corners of the device, with one also on the right side and another at the edge. The headphone jack is placed at the left side. The two ports on the right side are equipped with Thunderbolt 4 capabilities while the left side is equipped with USB 10Gbps (with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4a). The back-corner USB-C ports on the device can restrict the opening range of the device depending on the size of the cable being used, however, HP’s charging cable does not impede this. The laptop does not feature an Ethernet port meaning the Flip 14 is compatible with wireless Wi-Fi 7 (2×2), in addition to Bluetooth 5.4.

As a good thing, The Ultra Flip’s keyboard is very similar to that of the 2024 Specter x360. The Function keys have also been resized to ½ height with a lighter gray color and distinguished from the rest of the keys. In addition, some other keys have been moved around; the camera privacy button is now a calculator button, and the camera’s physical switch is now located above the camera. The power button at the upper right corner now has an added light blue color which improves visibility. The remaining key labels are still large, clear, and appropriately tactile while maintaining a pleasant touch. The dimmed up and down arrow keys are also ½ sized .

I had no issues with the basic navigation of the large 6.25 inch diagonal touchpad, which is easier for navigation to complete other tasks. Multi-touch gestures were also easy to navigate. Just like the reviewer from the previous model of the Spectre x360, I adjusted the haptic responsiveness for basic navigation to 25 as the default strength was set too high.

The speakers on the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 can deliver a satisfying volume through its four speakers. Using the laptop at a standard distance makes the audio too loud at maximum volume, with the sound becoming rough around the edges. However, when turned down to a comfortable listening level, a surprising amount of bass which is usually absent in most laptops is revealed.
This laptop comes with Windows 11 Home with bloatware, though there is a 30-day trial of McAfee Security pre-installed. This device is also a CoPilot+ PC, which provides users with full access to the AI tools available in Microsoft’s Windows.
